The Smart Switch — design case study

Upgrade the function, not the room.

A European-format wall switch with local intelligence — modular ESP32-C6 hardware, presence sensing and Home Assistant integration without cloud.

Abstract illustration of a wall switch with a presence-sensing field

This is a research and design case study, not a commercial product page. Open questions are kept open on purpose.

The idea

Wall switches are the most used control in a building and the least intelligent. The concept keeps a conventional-feeling switch and existing faceplates, and adds local intelligence behind it: presence awareness, local operation and Home Assistant integration without a cloud dependency.

Key decisions

A compute board and a switch board keep the platform modular, so single, double, dimmer and traveller variants share one brain. Mechanical parts should look stock but feel “space age”. Retrofit is incremental — one switch at a time.

Status

The case study covers research, stakeholders, personas, value proposition, ideation, technology and concept evolution. Open questions and validation are documented as such.

Outcomes

  • Clear architecture for a family of switch variants on one compute platform.
  • Structured case study of the design process from research to validation plan.
